1966 Vintage Airstream American Style

A couple months ago Tiffany from the fancy farm girl came and photographed us at our home in Washington State. This is our 24 foot 1966 Vintage Airstream that I restored five years ago.

We travel from Washington to California with our three precious dogs twice a year. It's very cozy in the 24 foot trailer with all of us. We love meandering along the California coast and staying in the RV parks. It is a slice of the" Americana Lifestyle" we enjoy !! Roasted hot dogs, cinnamon buns and sodas.

Last year on our trip to California I snapped this gorgeous butterfly display,( This is not photo shop,although I did add a vignette frame around the image.)
Since I took this image I have been obsessed with royal blue.Why don't we see more of this color in decorating ? What do you think of royal blue ?

A fire in the fireplace to warm our home and loving the smell of smoke.

To be really honest, Autumn is a sad time of the year for me. My Father and Mother both passed away in the month of October. I absolutely hate Halloween decorations because of this.

So, I am anxiously awaiting November in anticipation of Thanksgiving my favorite holiday. Gathering with friends, family and eating "over the top delicious" food, savoring every bite. Savoring every moment feeling blessed beyond words.

Our long road trip back to Washington State from Palm Springs had to include a stop in Spokane, Wa. for the famous Farm Chicks Antique Show.

Palm Springs Mid Century Modern

This was the home of prominent interior designer Mr. Arthur Elrod. It has the original interior from the mid 50's, and was featured in Architectural Digest 1963. The home has remained unchanged and still looks contemporary and chic.
I know everyone is thirsty for some bright spring color therapy. Here in Palm Springs it is bright and sunny, last month when I attended Modernism Week I snapped these photo's of some snazzy mid century modern interiors and outdoor spaces.
In my option great style and design has lasting appeal well beyond any trends.

Beauty in an unexpected place

Between a rock and a hard place is a delicate, beautiful, and fragile wild flower growing in a dry hot desert. This has a subtle, yet strong symbolic meaning for me, I love that the rocks form an open heart.
At the time I took the photo I was more focused on the wildflower, it was after I put them up on the computer I saw the symbolic meaning.This is one of the reasons I am so invigorated by photography and the power of nature.

This weekend we took a mini trip to the coast,Bliss Home Design in Corona Del Mar took my breath away.

"Bliss Home & Design is California's premier source for unique luxury furnishings and award winning interior design services. Since 1972 we have been creating intriguing design through our award winning design firm. Priding ourselves on the atmosphere of our exotic design boutiques, we present luxury for the new millennium."

The color palette of the store was in neutral tones of blue, gray, and creams. Dotted with interesting objects of natural curiosities , and dreamy vignettes. Bliss Home Design is a well curated design store, Melissa Macleod showed me around and gave me the OK to take as many photo's as I wanted, I snapped over 25 with my iphone !!

The Palm Springs Modernism Week is in full swing here in the desert. Modernism, has many events, lectures, and the Show which showcases some of the best mid century furniture and art in the country.
Modernism Week February 17 -27.Although, the Show ends today, this week is filled with more events and a Vintage Trailer show is next weekend.

I attended a lecture given by Trina Turk. She is well known for her colorful graphics she designs and produces clothing, home accessories,and jewelery . Her collections reflect the relaxed, retro, mid century California vibe. Her story is truly inspiring about how she followed her heart and passion, to

create the mega brand, Tina Turk.

Sunshine Yellow Thrift Store Finds

This is the yellow chair that started it all. I began decorating this guest room with a clean slate, another words I had zero furnishings, artwork or accessories. I had no idea where to start until I fell crazy in love with the yellow tufted club chair, I was lucky to buy it at an Estate sale in Palm Desert for $50.00. All of the artwork I was found at local thrift shops very reasonably.

The yellow lamps were purchased at separate thrift stores and I added lampshade from Crate and Barrel and a bright yellow finial purchased on line.Total cost for BOTH $100 (including 50.00 for the lampshade) Still extremely reasonable. This room is a work in progress. I may re- upholster the headboard in a crazy really bright retro fabric. Should I paint the walls ??

I have several legitimate reasons why I have been absent from my blog, number one is I just didn't feel like blogging. The other reasons, and there many but have absolutely nothing to do with design, thrifting,
or junking. Although,I have been thrifting like crazy and decorating our place in the Palm Springs desert. The thrift shops in the desert are amazing, lot's of retro 60's and 70's. I've found tons of super fabu clothing !!! Are you interested in seeing some of the outfits ?
You will be surprised at the style.....Mid Century- Modern Glam. A style I've never done before, and I think It has turned out pretty fabulous !!! A big departure from our tree house in Washington.

We sold red vintage books, first aids kits, huge set of moose antlers, oil paintings, pair of baby blue chairs, linens, pillows, iron bed, lace screen, jars, lamps, and so much more that I can't remember.

I miss the Canadian Gulf Islands.The bald eagles,otters.seals,starfish,and whales. We haven't been able to go there this summer. Seeing the Orca whales is a magical experience I treasure.
Just being on the water is so relaxing and being surrounded by the natural beauty is healing to the soul.
Summer is coming to an end soon,maybe I'll sneak away for a couple days,before it's too late.I need to go.

I fell in love with this wallpaper from Graham and Brown, this is my starting point and inspiration for the dining/living/entry.

The dining room "Before". I am removing the huge mirror, replacing wallpaper with Bohem Brown. and replacing the crystal chandelier with something modern. The chairs will be recovered and the 9x12 wool rug will go under the dining set.

Well, I've been reading a lot of blogs on design, working out for the first time in my life and loving how I feel. And, a very private and personal part of most of my waking hours are devoted to caring for my Mother.

I have had my blog since 2006, I don't really share too much information about myself...I don't know if you are interested in "me". Sometimes there seems to be more important things in life than sharing my latest junk find.
Three personal things about me you may or may not want to know.

1. I did not marry until I was 45 years old. Gasp. Why? To busy with working, traveling the world and making a life for myself. I did eventually marry my dream man. We have a fabulous life together.

2. I was a the forefront of "Country Design" in the early 80's in the Seattle area. My retail store was recognized nationally by several design magazines. My passion for design in all forms started when I was a very young child, and I tend to over decorate my home. Why? Because, I can not tame my obsessive designer tendencies.

3. I am happiest when I'm in nature with my two dogs, McKinley and Pasha. We also have two small dogs, Gigi and Prince.

Want to know more ? Only if you are interested. There are some juicy parts, too.

Dream Victorian Cottage + My 1903 House

Last weekend when we went to La Conner, WA. to see the daffodil's I spotted this beautiful blue Victorian house. With the apple blossoms in full bloom against the blue it made for a really pretty shot.Most of the Victorian homes in this area were built around the early 1900's.The quality and craftsmanship is amazing, many built by seaman in the winter.

I found this old photo on Ebay.This Victorian house was originally owned by the Eden's. I purchased this property in 1987 from the family of an 85 year old woman who had recently passed away. At the time it looked exactly like this.Since then I have remodeled the porch to add more square footage,landscaped,and added a new fence.
In the past 20 years it has been home to several retail stores, the first being "The Country Goose" home furnishings shop I started in 1983."The Goose occupied the space for more than 10 years.
"The Dish Ran Away The Spoon" gift store was in the space for a year.
During some renovation the carpet was pulled and to my surprise under the carpet was beautiful old growth vertical grain fir flooring in pristine condition.
For two years, 'The Beach House" occupied the house. A beautiful store with beach related gifts and home furnishings.The landscape was changed to reflect a "seashore feel" with flag stone and grasses. A new fence was installed, An outdoor gas fireplace and fire pit also added to the ambiance. Currently it is the home to a Real Estate Company.
This house is located on the main street through Anacortes,Wa..The first of the San Juan Islands. There is only a hand full of the old houses remaining on Commercial Ave. I think the Eden's would be proud the house is still there. Standing,growing old gracefully.

Springtime in Seattle

I am in love with the springtime this years.I usually associate spring with pollen and allergies,this year it hasn't hit me as hard. After twenty years of severe allergies and asthma there is a possibility I'm outgrowing them (I HOPE)

Custom Industrial Chandelier

Is this chandelier cool or what? The talented duo(Mary and Tom) at Mary Davis Vintage Lighting made it out of old lighting parts as well as the custom made light socket to hold five Edison bulbs. The rise and fall bracket was made from an old dental arm.
It is the perfect solution for our large dining table we plopped in our living room.

Faded Memory

What is it about old papers,string,and any other object of my crazy desire? When I'm creating these still life vignettes, I find myself creating stories about how these objects were used and who owned them. Also,how these things have outlived the person who had them. It is a reminder to me how our lives are really so fleeting, even when someone lives to be really old. It does make me sad. So, why am I so amused by the past when it isn't even my own??

Hello fashionable fantastic lovelies,
This is the fabulous 60's dress I found thrifting last week. Polyester love and the fit is perfect.I got myself all dolled up for a party we went to Friday night, the compliments were a plenty. I had to let them in on my secret shame, $7.00 at a thrift store. Oh well,I felt like a million bucks.

What to do with an old chicken feeder

Last fall I went on a Junket to Battle Ground, WA. to the Barn House Fall Sale.This little ole worn out chicken feeder was just sittin' there waiting for someone to come along and rescue it from certain fate of landfill.I saw potential in the form of a plate rack..when I returned home I promptly placed it under my trolley and was delighted to discover it was the perfect fit.It holds my ironstone,china and silver platters.It is so perfect and useful.

This is a collage, mixed media piece I made from a trip I took to Thailand in 2000.
I added a old letter written in 1959 that was found at an estate sale.The newer ephemera was collected while I was there.I love this form of inspirational,and temporary art.I plan on doing a series of these to make photo cards.

1.Old coffee bin. Great for dog supplies,we have four dogs so this is stuffed.
2.Vintage dresser.Yes,in the family room.I basically use it to store all my stationary and paper products,odds and ends away from sight.
3.I collect old metal cash,tool and fishing boxes, to store keys, pens,receipts and any other miscellany objects of distraction. Usually found at Estate Sales for a dollar or two. Tool boxes are great for craft supplies.

It's a beautiful sunny day.I sat in the sun and read my new book, Etc. by Sibella Court."Creating beautiful interiors with the things you love." After, Leslie from A Creative Mint blog recommend this book to me I ran to Anthropologie and bought it.
Uber chic Sibella is an interior stylist,living in Australia,after a stint in New York.Her collecting,beach-combing,"slapdash" styling is in line with my own unusual sense of visual display.I love the unexpected,the lost and found,the humble mixed with something precious.

Etc. is a treasure chest filled with imagination.

All of my life I have been passionate about home interiors. It has been the canvas of my art.
I made a successful career with a retail store called "The Country Goose" For 13 years we supplied a variety of home furnishings. Our main design focus was "Country" in every form. Americana, English, French, and a constant rotation of eclectic furnishings and accessories.
The next chapter of my on going pre occupation with "Stuff" I became a manufactures rep. I had 40 different lines of Home Furnishings & Gifts. I sold to all the stores in my area many of whom I knew from being in the retail business.I did a lot of shopping in the process.
I was then fortunate to travel the world extensively for 5 years.Seeing many beautiful homes. Country estates, farmhouses,hunting lodges and some of the finest Hotels and Inns. Also, some not so glamorous places like tents and yurts. From my experience traveling I learned more about lifestyle and entertaining, the beautiful surroundings were there to support and create the feel of warmth, friendship, and to show it's soul the personality of the owners.
I have a bad habit of going to garage and estate sales. I cannot pass up a great piece of furniture, art piece, china, flatware, textiles, and anything else I feel is worthy. So................. I have a place where I can list my great finds.I like to call junk. Welcome to my world. Have fun.

Palm Springs Holiday 2009 at 8000 ft

Sand,picture perfect green grass golf course and 100 ft palm trees are what you expect in Palm Springs,well not at 8000 feet,it's a whole new world..snow.pine trees,snow fields and fresh air,,, for a few minutes it feels like Christmas,I wore my vintage Beaver fur, happy and fuzzy warm inside. We drank hot chocolate and looked at the snow.It was a frighting tram ride to the top,rotating the entire time.I was scared. Happy Holidays everyone...

"Garage Sale" Palm Springs Style

My good luck, lost on the side streets of Palm Springs I see a generic "Garage Sale"
sign.It's a rainy Saturday morning,I make a few turns and stop at this house.

I walked in and almost fainted.I am not kidding.It looked like Versailles.Floor to ceiling oil paintings,tapestry's,Louis XVI everything.Dresden,Meissen,.. oh my.
I wondered into a castle.I had to know who this person was. Her name was Vera Gajitch.
When I returned home I immediately had to "google" her.I learned she was originally from Yugoslavia.She came to the US with very little except her talent.Vera was an artist. A very well known one.The linens and textiles designed by "Vera" that are now so collectible,that was her.Widowed and no children she left her estate to the Catholic Church.Some items are worthy of a museum and a hefty price was deserved.

Out of respect,I did not take any other photo's.
I purchased a huge textile from Italy that I will photograph when I return home.
Several animated vintage Christmas people.Beautiful mother of pearl flatware set,wine glasses and a carved wood shield.The passion for life this extraordinary woman had was truly breath taking.I consider this the most incredible "Garage Sale" I have ever been to, or ever will see again.One word.... Amazing !!!!!

Our Kitchen Remodel Before and After

It is a rainy day here in Palm Springs.We left Seattle to escape this sort of weather.
It is a good excuse to stay indoors and catch up on miscellaneous chores, this post being one.
Back in July we remodeled our small, out dated dysfunctional kitchen.We worked with a kitchen designer,I put my personal spin on it by adding a rustic/industrial cabinet,a recycled textile trolley,and a chicken feeder used for a platter rack. Above the sink instead of the traditional cabinets and shelf, I found a wonderfully patina old mirror. All of the lighting is vintage,remade by Mary Davis Vintage Lighting.The hardware is still on order from Rocky Mountain Hardware.The first order never came,advice..beware of ordering from on line, 2nd party discount distributors !!!
Overall it was a good experience.I love the way the space opened up and is in scale with the rest of the house.

Master Bedroom Wrap Up

Facing opposite of the bed.I purchased this enormous cabinet at a consignment shop several years ago.The hand carving is really pretty,I don't know which country in Europe it is from,or the original use.On each side of the center glass case are wood shelf's.Anybody have a good guess where it's from ?? What was it used for?

I collect white standard poodle's as shown in the glass case,which also holds my Steiff bears and animals from childhood.
Our bedroom is a sanctuary..It is quiet,calm and peace full. Notice... no T.V.,computers,exercise equipment,paperwork..just peace and quiet.
I hope you have enjoyed seeing my very private space.

Since we recently remodeled our kitchen,I have been re- arranging and re- decorating our home.So in the next couple weeks I will show you what I've done.Starting with the Master bedroom.

The overall theme of our bedroom is French blended with sacred objects and collections of rosary's.I love "Madonna and Child" images and I've collected quite a few.I like to group smaller pictures together to make a statement.

A little bit about me.Ya ready?
Born to a couple social lights,pro football father,and movie star glamorous mother.
We lived in Hollywood,with John Wayne as our neighbor.They drove Cadillac's,drank cocktails,had pool parties and lived the swank life in the 60's,Southern California style.We had maids and attitudes to match.
(the next part is hard to explain without giving away to many details)
Long story short...At the tender age of 7 me ,my mom,sister,our critters(two toy poodles)found our selves living in a Ford Fairlane.My father was,shall I say was on a 9 month vacation courtesy of the State of California.
He returned with renewed enthusiasm and grandiose ideas.We would move to the new land of opportunity and the farthest place away from California.Ready for this ??
Alaska.We packed up a newly stolen 1966 black Coupe de Ville (convertible,no less)big fins and all,and drove and drove and drove.until I thought we were going to fall off the face of the earth. Which in reality we did.

With high style in her mind and no money in her pocket book, my mother set out to dress her girls in the finest Alaskan fashion.Where? No Bullocks,I Magnin? Even if there was we no chance in a frozen hell of affording anything.My glamorous mother shortly found the local ....I can hardly say it. Salvation Army.We soon found ourselves dressing in the finest white rabbit fur coats,warm fuzzy sweaters,clunky boots and leopard clutches.(no shit)
She once found an Alligator handbag and shrieked with excitement..price tag $1.00. She promptly explained "this is a 400. dollar bag at Bullocks" In the car she examined the pristine interior only to find shoved down in the side pocket.... a dollar bill.So this is where my story begins.At that moment I decide,this is not so bad after all.I can dress in the finest Alaskan fashions at a fraction of the Southern Californian prices.I'm in.

Kitchen Remodel Vintage Lighting

It is true.
1.remodeling is stressful.(under statement)
2.It does take twice as long as planned.
3. always cost more than expected.(floor joists,etc,etc...)
After ordering our Rocky Mountain Hardware through a internet distributor,waiting the usual 8 weeks.I receive a call that the order was entered incorrectly.So.....another 3-4 weeks to re-order.
That's enough complaining,I could go off on a another tangent about the huge glue stain on the granite but I won't.
So, here is the high lite my 1904 vintage flush mounts with Edison bulbs.I was extremely lucky to find 5 of these rare beauties at my favorite lighting store in the whole world, Mary Davis Vintage Lighting.located in La Conner,WA. They look sooooo much better than the 48 cans that were there before.The Edison bulbs give off a nice warm glow.Worth the extra cost.Wait until you see the French vintage milk glass pendent we chose for above the kitchen island.

They have done it again. The talented duo created quite a vignette at their barn for another great sale.The weather was perfect,as always. The hospitality was warm,we had a delicious lunch under the trees next to the pasture.
Thirteen girls,a bus,a patient driver,junk,cakes,donuts,prizes for all,giggles galore.WOW,what a day.Timi organized the first bus JUNKet,I am sure there will be many more to come.(I Hope)
